Gardening in 2017

Yum
It's certainly been a strange year for our garden, and definitely not one of our better years. While nothing specific has gone wrong, it's been a hard year.

On the positive side, our ornamental crops are doing outstanding.
Broom corn appears to be growing well. We don't know much about it yet, and this is our first year so we really are just winging it on this one.

Gourds are going to be bountiful. Everywhere you look is a gourd.

The ornamental corn has the most colorful tassels and ears, lets just hope it continues on the path of being colorful :)

Apparently I missed getting a photo of our pumpkins. They are doing really well. Not as numerous as past years, but they appear to be a very nice size.

We tried Blue Hubbard Squash for the first time.

Another first. Vermont Cranberry Beans. This is a dry shelling bean, so we have some time left yet before we can try this one. Excited to see how it turns out.

The tomatoes. Our tomato trellis ended up working better than we expected, and we will improve on this design next year. As far as the harvest, we would be doing good if they would turn red. Green tomatoes everywhere you look.

My first year for Poblano Peppers. I didn't think they were going to make it, but here they come.

While I was out, I noticed the berries on the asparagus. I thought it was pretty.

Things I didn't take a picture of were the onions and bell peppers. I normally freeze many pounds of both. We had a complete loss on the bell peppers. The second planting of the onions, went better, but they just don't grow. So, salad onions they are.

Carrots, Swiss Chard, Lettuce, all did nicely. Green Beans were looking sketchy, but they are finally producing nicely.

The "Fooled Ya" Jalapenos will be up for review soon. I picked some, and they are soooo mild, I wouldn't even know they are related to a jalapeno if it weren't for the shape. So, I am going to make Jalapeno Poppers this coming week, and my husband will have them for the first time. That will be the true test!

How is your garden? Bountiful harvest or

    1. Angie ~ The gourd is just used for decoration. I'll have them setting along side some pumpkins for fall decor. They are fun!

  2. Hi,
We are having a different year as well. Slugs have been a huge problem on our cole crops. Our flowers are doing great. :-) So happy about that. Last year we had a worm get into our gladiola bulbs.

    1. Did the worm ruin the bulbs then? Yikes! I have some great slug history, so I will email you on that :)

  3. The gourds and squash are amazing! I would be so excited I'd be out there watching them grow. I saw a recipe for fried okra and green tomatoes. I'd love to have a couple of your green tomatoes. Our tomato season is over here. Beautiful garden, Kris.

    Wishes for tasty dishes,
    Linda

  4. We are near Madison and Baraboo. We have had a crazy tremendous crop of zucchini this year and it is STILL producing! Cukes, too. And the tomatoes have been beautiful. The peppers did great for a while and then (maybe too much rain??) they just quit. It has been a peculiar summer with the weather. I have never ever seen the Hydrangeas grow and flower like they did this year. And when the flowers turn pink, it is almost a hot pink!! They are turning an absolute gorgeous champagne beige now. Just gorgeous! Each year of gardening is different.... but it always brings much joy!!

    1. Your hydrangeas sound beautiful!! This is our first year with any flower to speak of, so I don't have anything to compare on that. Interesting on your peppers, as ours did start out strong, and we did have a lot of heavier rains early in the season.
You are right... each year is different, the rewards and joy always vary, as do the challenges!

  5. No way, you are growing broom corn??? I want to make a broom with my class and I wished all summer that I had planted some. What will you do with it? If you have a lot will you save me some? Exciting!

    1. Yes, and yes!!!
We will use it for decor and share with mom and gram. I saw it for the first time last year when Carla shared some with us. Do you want me to see if I can ship some?

  6. Everything looks gorgeous! Our tomatoes are paused right now too. We had loads of them and then a break. Now we are back to be loaded with big green tomatoes that are really slow to turn. I wish they'd hurry up!!

Your squash look so cool and those cranberry beans look awesome too. I can't wait to hear how they turn out. And your hubby just has to like the poppers, I'm hungry just thinking about them!
