I am happy to report that the plants that the chickens ate off, appear to be making a full recovery.
You can see the stems that were nibbled down to nothing, and all the beautiful new growth!
We are so relieved!
We planted our asparagus patch three years ago, so we are finally able to start eating it this year. We've already had a couple stalks, and it is so delicious. So much for flavor than what I picked up at the store.
We had hoped to finish planting the garden in the next couple of days, but we are going to wait at least until the weekend. We are heading into a cold spell, so until we warm up again, we'll keep the plants near the house.
This is what we have planted so far:
Sweet Corn
Popcorn (SO excited for this)
Garlic
Onions (3 kinds)
Green Beans
Carrots (3 kinds)
Peas
Lettuce (3 kinds)
Spinach
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Green Cabbage
Cilantro
How is your garden growing?
Hooooray! The garden sounds great, I hope you have big success!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Carlee!
DeleteOh good, I'm glad the little plants made it! It sounds like you've got tons of good stuff going in the garden. I love this time of year. My garden is doing quite well too! I've got all my herbs planted (oregano, rosemary, chamomile, basil, parsley, cilantro, chives, and dill), I've planted spinach, two types of lettuce, kale, radishes, carrots, two types of onions, red potatoes, and garlic. I think I'm going to plant my tomato starts next weekend, and start growing my zucchini, cucumber, and pumpkin to be planted around the middle of May. We also have a strawberry patch that is showing good growth. We are crossing our fingers for berries this year.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see more pictures of your garden Kris! Have a great day! :-)
You are doing great! Isn't it exciting?? I keep wanting to plant herbs, but I can't decide if I should have a separate herb garden or not. Then I talk my self in circles, and end up getting no where! It's time to commit! We are the same with strawberries, this will be our first year! Hope you have some great strawberry recipes to share :)
DeleteSo, are the chickens still in solitary?
ReplyDeletePart time only. If I am home, then they get to free range. Seems to be working out as a good compromise :)
DeleteYou are doing great planting. We can not plant outside as of yet. Only lettuce and spinach. I am excited to get started.
ReplyDeleteHow are the chickens doing? I am happy the plants survived.
Carla
Oh Carla, it's so cold this week, I am hoping we don't regret having planted already!
DeleteChickens are doing great. They have adapted to their semi-confinement with no complaints :)
Glad to know that those plants are recovering! Homegrown asparagus is my dream.
ReplyDeleteI hope someday you get to grow your own asparagus!
DeleteSounds like your ready for spring. Know I just finish planting our summer vegetables. we are already hitting the 80's in Mississippi. been wanting asparagus, just not brave enough to start, any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteEnjoy reading your farm experiences.Thanks.
Patience is key, since you will have to wait three years to enjoy it!
DeleteCommit to a location since this is a permanent site. This is why we didn't plant sooner, we just couldn't decide where we wanted this "forever" bed to be.
We did not start from seed, we started from roots. I felt we would have better success this route.
You have a lot of different variables in Mississippi than what I am familiar with, so I did find this for you if it helps! http://extension.msstate.edu/vegetable-gardening-mississippi/vegetable-varieties/asparagus
I'm so glad your plants came back! Oh, I would've been so mad!! There would've been fried chicken for supper for sure! Ha!! ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kelly!
DeleteYes.... We would have been having a lot of fried chicken for sure!
Thank goodness! It looks healthy and good! Your girlies weren't being selfish, they were just hungry! ;) Yum! Asparagus!!!
ReplyDeleteThey sure were hungry for those fresh young green leaves!
DeleteThe asparagus just makes me smile. So thrilled to have it!

Oh that is good news. Loved seeing your Asparagus. I don't have a (veggie) garden. I plant flowers but the last few days have been (rainy) so I am still waiting to get some of them planted.
ReplyDeleteI hope we will get to see pictures of your pretty flowers soon :)
Deletei've actually never seen asparagus in the ground--very cool! i'd be excited about that potential popcorn too. :)
ReplyDeleteWell, I am glad I shared the asparagus then!
