Veggies are Growing

Yum
Despite our bumpy start, our garden is doing well.

I am so happy to be able to enjoying salads fresh from the garden.

We typically don't do well raising peas, but we pushed ourselves this year.  Planted extra early. Replanted a second time.  Added some fertilizer, and we just might get enough to enjoy eating fresh.
We found our first blossom yesterday!

Our Broccoli plants pulled through and although small, we already picked a small head.

We are trying a couple new things this year.  We planted more sweet corn than ever, and planted it with the tractor and farm planter.  We are hoping to figure out as we go, some way to keep the raccoon from taking it all from us.  And at least with a larger than normal crop, we have a little more room to experiment with methods.

Our whole farm has a bumper crop of dandelions this year, and apparently the strawberry plants were wanting to protect and invite in a bunch of dandelions to join them.  Ugh!  Lots of pulling and we got them thinned out, and now we are trying cardboard mulch. I'm unsure how this will go, but I've always heard of so many people trying it, I want to give it a shot.  So, after months of saving every box we received, we put the cardboard paths down.  Hoping this is successful!

Have you ever tried cardboard mulching?

  2. that is just gorgeous you are so lucky, for some reason all my tomato plants were beautiful now they look burnt no idea why. What a great lettuce crop you have every raccoon in this area eats everything I grow even with the fence up. Enjoy I envy you!!! Great job

  3. It looks like you're off to a great start! We've never done cardboard mulching, we normally do newspaper and grass clippings.

  4. Hi,
I am so excited about your sweet corn patch. :-) Your garden looks great.
We used cardboard last year for our paths and mulch. I thought it worked well. This year I am laying newspaper and straw on top of the newspaper.
